The Youth Club is held in the old Nursery School at Ketley and is only for youngsters who live in Ketley aged between 12 and 16.
Funding for the first year was been gained from a variety of sources and totals at the moment about £9,000. This money will pay for essential internal works to the building which have already been given the go ahead by Telford and Wrekin Council. This will allow better use of the building and give more flexibility to have a variety of users and uses. Also money is available to buy equipment for the club and the youngsters, volunteers and committee will decide how and when this money will be spent. Some has already been spent on cues and equipment for the two full sized snooker tables donated and they are both now in place and ready for use. They were donated by The Telford Hotel and Golf Club at Sutton Hill. Everyone associated with this project would like to thank them for this fantastic gift. Also a table tennis table has been sold to us by Park Lane Youth Club for a very small amount so thanks to them. Thanks are also in order for the local residents who have assisted with various aspects of setting up Ketley Youth Club with particular thanks going to Neil Overton who has given up many hours of his time and transport and Darren Robotham with time and money.
I would also like to ask for support and tolerance from residents around the club who we appreciate may not fully support such a venture very close to their homes.
Club Nights
The first club nights have been held and 56 young people have attended with more than normal numbers of volunteers coming along to support through the first set-up weeks. Money has been spent on activities and more will be spent over the coming weeks.
As one youth said 'This is keeping us from messing about on the streets.' and another 'This is fab and should have been done a long time ago'.
At 9pm the youngsters make their way home and School Lane becomes noisier for about thirty minutes. Yes it does take them that long to say their goodbyes.
